3 Ways to Embrace A Sense of Unity for Inner Peace

I have always followed my own personal code of ethics and morality rooted in self preservation. I don’t, nor will I ever, apologize for that.

All that I am, have done up to this point, and will be until the end of time is in the name of freedom. All I’ve ever desired for myself and my loved ones is the freedom to navigate this life in peace. To be free from the pursuit of not being forsaken and oppressed.

I learned early in childhood, from what was taught and what I observed, that people who look like me struggle to truly know freedom in this societal construct. From my earliest memories I’ve naturally rebelled against external authority and the idea of blind obedience and conformity.

Because of this, I’ve often carried the guilt of choices made because I did what I felt I had to in order to cope and survive in this life. This internal conflict, plus a chronic state of dis-ease, leaves no room to wonder why I’ve longed for a sense of unity.

Where there is unity, there is peace.

For most of my life, I thought it was about unity among my relatives and family. Then I thought it was all about unity in my community and throughout the world. It wasn’t until I stopped running from myself that I fully recognized that all I’ve ever really wanted was to feel unified within self. To be free, feel whole, and to have peace in this life.

I think that’s all most of us want.

3 Ways to Embrace A Sense of Unity for Inner Peace

(1) Forgive Yourself for Surviving

Many of us have made choices because we felt like, “We had no choice or because that’s just the way things are.” Having a survival mindset isn’t a crime, a defect, nor a punishment. However, we must be able and willing to reconcile with our actions and choices. No matter the consequence. It is the only way we come to accept our whole selves: the good, the bad, the ugly, and the beauty. This enables us to embrace our inherent wholeness and be unified within self.

(2) Find Your Tribe

Learning to accept and love self are the first steps towards uniting with like hearts and minds. The definition of unity that resonates with me most states that it is a totality of related parts : an entity that is a complex or systematic whole. With this definition, unity doesn’t mean everyone agrees on everything , instead it enables us to embrace the idea of different (sometimes opposing) beings/forces coexisting with mutual understanding.

(3) Build Your Village

I believe the greatest gift we can give ourselves, that also serves as our contributions to society, is to take the experiences, knowledge, skills, and tools we’ve acquired in life to create and live with a sense of pleasure and purpose alongside like hearts and minds. I also believe that in order to do so, we must individually have a sense of self-governance as well as collectively live in alignment with the law and order of our chosen community/land.
